Library Awarded eReader Exploration Grant

The Christian County Library has been awarded an E-Reader Exploration grant of $1095 to purchase five e-readers and tablets. These library-owned devices will be used in Library Community Courses to help library patrons learn more about their own e-readers, make informed decisions when purchasing e-readers, and learn how to use the library’s e-book lending system with their device. The e-readers will also be used to train library staff so they may better assist patrons with e-reader questions. The devices to be purchased with the grant include a Kindle Touch, a Kindle Fire, a Nook Simple Touch, a Nook Tablet, and an iPad. The grant was awarded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Technology Act under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

The library began offering a monthly class, “Downloading E-Books from the Library,” in February 2012. Until now, library instructors had to explain the e-book check out and download process without being able to demonstrate it on an e-reader.  Staff instructors also relied on their own research and training rather than personal experience with the devices to teach the class and answer patron questions about e-readers. With the new library-owned e-readers, technology instructors and other library staff members will soon gain hands-on experience with the most popular e-readers, making all staff better able to serve the public.
The new devices will also allow the Christian County Library to expand free e-reader education. Beginning in August, the library will offer occasional “E-Reader Petting Zoo” sessions, where the public can try out and ask questions about various types of e-readers in a non-commercialized setting or bring their own e-readers to get assistance from library staff.  Library patrons can also expect some tutorials on checking out and downloading library e-books, produced by Christian County Library technology staff, to appear this fall on the library’s website at
