The end of school is fast approaching, and parents are on the lookout for affordable ways to entertain their children this summer. The 2010 Christian County Library Summer Reading Program may be the answer. The program, whose theme this year is “Make a Splash,” is geared towards three to eleven-year olds. And like all Christian County Library programs, it’s free and open to all county residents.
Participation in the Summer Reading Program at the Christian County Library is on the increase. The library had over 200 children participate in 2007, and more than 450 in 2008. And it’s no wonder. Studies show that public library summer programs like those offered at the Christian County Library help bridge the summer learning gap. Educators know that school age children can lose more than a month of learning over the summer. Children who read at least six self-selected books retain reading progress they have made over the course of the school year. Those who read 10 to 20 books may even make reading gains during the summer.
The summer reading program pairs incentive to read with fun, often literacy-related activities. For the reading portion of the program, children keep a reading log over the course of the summer, and are recognized at a ceremony at the end of the program. Sign up for the reading portion is already in progress. Forms can be picked up at the Christian County Library or at http://christiancounty.lib.mo.us. The library also holds a story and craft hour for three- to six-year olds most Tuesdays, no registration necessary. For the activity portion of the program, children can sign up for two of a number of exciting programs, including visits from KY3 meteorologists, the Mad Science crew, a magic show, and more. Sign up for these begins Wednesday, June 2nd , at 9am. These programs fill up fast, so participants are encouraged to sign up in the library or online with their library card early on June 2nd.
If the reading and Summer Program activities don’t keep you busy enough, you can attend family movie days at the Christian County Library. Movies this summer include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Disney’s The Frog Princess. Refreshments are served at these events and no registration is required.
